Ljubljana, the picturesque fairy book capital of Slovenia, is nestled along the Ljubljana River and framed by the majestic Julian Alps. Ljubljana (pronounced lube-lee-ah-na) is the smallest capital city in Europe. Home to the University of Ljubljana with a student body of 50,000, this city of 300,000 residents has a youthful vibe (the average age is only 42).
Take A Stroll Along The Ljubljana River
After a short 90 minute drive from Zagreb, Croatia, we arrived in Ljubljana just in time to take a stroll on the tree lined promenade leisurely winding its way along the Ljubljana River. With a canopy of trees overhead shading sidewalk cafes and quaint shops, it was easy to understand why Ljubljana has been named one of the most livable cities in Europe and Slovenia ranked Europe’s third greenest country behind Sweden and Finland.

Admire The Fairy Book Architecture
Much of Ljubljana’s beautiful bridges and notable buildings can be attributed to the Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik. Born in Ljubljana, the son of a cabinetmaker, Plečnik became an esteemed architect and University professor. More than just an accomplished architect, he was a visionary in urban planning. Focused on creating sustainable green public spaces, he reshaped the city from a small sleepy town into Slovenia’s capital city and cultural center recognized in 2021 by the UNESCO World Heritage Foundation.
Take An Excursion Down The Ljubljana River
There is no better way to get a different perspective of this amazing city than from the river. Local tour operators offer excursions down the Ljubljana River which, in reality, is more of a canal thanks to Jože Plečnik’s urban design. As you float past the colorful pastel-colored buildings, the greenery flowing down the embankments and pass under the stylized bridges, you are struck just how amazing this city is.

Explore Prešernov Trg Square
Located across from the historic center of Ljubljana’s Old Town, the impressive Prešernov trg square is reached by crossing the Triple Bridge (Tromostovlje in Slovenian) which actually is comprised of three bridges. The square is named after Slovenia’s greatest romantic poet, France Prešeren whose statue is prominently displayed. A popular spot for locals, it also serves as the site for concerts and festivals.

Cross The Dragon Bridge
Built in 1900, the Dragon Bridge, named for the four fire-breathing dragon sculptures placed on each end, was one of the largest reinforced concrete bridges Europe. Dragon’s can be found throughout Ljubljana. The symbolic protector of the city, the dragon embodies power, courage and wisdom. Zmajček (“Little Dragon”) is the city’s mascot. The bridge is a popular meeting point with “srečaj me pri zmajskem mostu” (“meet me at the Dragon Bridge”) being a common expression.

Visit Ljubljana’s Old Town
At the center of the Old Town is the Town Square. The Town Hall with its distinctive Clock Tower and the Robba Fountain stand proudly in the square. The Town Hall was built in 1484, but completely renovated in 1719. It continues to this day to serve as the City’s Administrative Building.
In front of the Town Hall is the Robba Fountain, created by the Italian sculptor Francesco Robba who was inspired by Rome’s Fontana dei Quattro Flumi (Fountain of Four Rivers). One of Ljubljana’s best known Baroque monuments, the fountain dates to 1751 and is distinguished by three figures representing the gods of the three rivers in Slovenia – the Krka, the Sava, and the Ljubljana Rivers.

Visit The Cathedral of Ljubljana
Walking down Dolničarjeva ulica we came to the Cyril Methodist Square and Cathedral of Ljubljana. Built in 1736, the cathedral was dedicated to Saint Nicholas and is distinguished by its massive bronze sculptured doors (added when Pope John Paul II visited in 1996), its green dome and clock tower. While the building itself is not particularly impressive …

the cathedral’s interior is is breathtaking!
Explore Ljubljana’s Quaint Side Streets
While the main squares of Ljubljana are the top tourist attractions, take the time to stroll down Ljubljana’s quaint side streets. Explore the small boutiques and art galleries hidden away in the historic buildings of the Old Town. Relax at one of the many cozy sidewalk cafes.

Visit Križevniška ulica
One of the oldest streets in Ljubljana, Križevniška ulica is lined with trees and colorful pots filled with greenery and flowers. A favorite of artists, the buildings with perfectly faded façades create a welcoming atmosphere. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture that Instagram moment!

Tour Ljubljana Castle
Sitting majestically atop a forested hill overlooking the city, the Ljubljana Castle has stood guard for over 900 years. Originally a medieval fortress, it was used by Napoleon as a barracks and military hospital. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction especially the Castle’s Outlook Tower from which the panoramic vistas of the entire city of Ljubljana can be viewed.

The castle can be reached by walking a trail up the 375m-high hill, but it’s much easier to take the funicular at a round trip cost of €8.00 per person.

The castle also houses a number of museums, exhibits, historical rooms and outdoor cafes.

End The Day With An Aperitif and Dinner
Nothing ends the day better than having an aperitif and dinner with friends. Ljubljana is filled with wonderful outdoor cafes offering enticing culinary dishes from the world over.

Take A Day Trip To Bled Lake
With a 1,000 year old storybook castle perched on a cliff and a 17th century church built on an island, Bled Lake, Slovenia is like no other. Surrounded by the Julian Alps and dense forests, it is arguably one of the most picturesque lakes in the world. Located just 55km from Ljubljana, it makes for the perfect day trip!
